Landscapes
I am primarily a landscape photographer. I love the process of creating a photograph utilizing nature's raw materials. This may sound strange since you would assume a landscape just IS; but, I assure you, it is NOT. There are as many ways to take a bad landscape photograph as a good one. Most photographers, myself included, could stand next to Ansel Adams and never achieve anything close to his genius. Nature presents the raw materials but it is up to the photographer to assemble the elements into a compelling composition. This requires selecting foreground, middle ground and background elements that work together to draw in and hold the viewer's attention. It is equally important to eliminate unnecessary elements that might distract from the overall composition. Thus, scouting a site for a landscape photograph requires a lot of "leg work", often requiring multiple visits to a site at different times of the day and/or at different times of the year. It is all about finding the perfect vantage point and the perfect lighting. This "waiting for the light" can often be a cold and frustrating process. But, it is well worth the effort as you wait for nature to put on her magnificent lighting show.
